Careers

LocalMaker is a small team based in Woodstock, Cape Town, working with handmade homeware from South African makers. We hire people who care about good service, steady systems and well made products that travel safely across the country.

Where the work happens

Our day-to-day work brings together product sourcing, online order handling, gifting support, packing, logistics and customer care. Some roles are office based in Woodstock, while others support stock movement, delivery coordination and content from our Cape Town base. Because we serve customers in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Stellenbosch, the work needs careful follow through and a practical eye.

We look for people who can keep track of details, communicate clearly and handle handmade goods with care. Orders often include ceramics, woven textiles, carved wood pieces and decorative items, so a steady hand and good judgement matter. A little dust on a wrapped mug, a loose knot in a ribbon or a missed label can affect the whole order.

Roles we hire for

We do not keep a fixed vacancy list here, but we often look for skills across a few areas of the business. Some roles are hands on, others are more admin and coordination based. A person can fit well if they are organised, calm under pressure and willing to work with local makers and customers in a straightforward way.

  • Customer care and order support
  • Logistics and dispatch coordination
  • Buying, product curation and maker support
  • Content, product descriptions and community updates
  • Gift packing, stock control and quality checks
  • Corporate gifting and custom bundle administration

What a good fit looks like

Handmade homeware needs respect at every step. A mug with a hand finished glaze, a cushion cover in natural fibre or a wooden bowl with oil finish all ask for different handling and clear care notes. We value people who notice those differences and can explain them simply to a customer or colleague.

Experience in retail, e-commerce, gifting, warehousing or customer service helps, but it is not the only path in. Good time management, strong written English and the ability to keep systems tidy count for a lot. If you have worked with stock counts, delivery notes, packaging standards or customer queries before, that experience will be useful.

How to apply

If you would like to be considered for future roles, send your CV through the enquiry form on our contact page and include a short note about the type of work you are looking for. Mention any experience with handmade goods, online orders, gifting, customer care or logistics. If you have a portfolio, samples of writing or a list of relevant duties, add those too.

  • Send your enquiry through the contact form
  • Attach your CV in a clear format
  • Tell us which role areas suit your experience
  • Include any practical notes about availability or location

Working around seasonal demand

Some periods are busier than others, especially around housewarming gifts, weddings, corporate gifting and year end orders. In those stretches the team needs extra care with wrapping, label checking, stock movement and delivery coordination. Because we ship nationwide, careful packing matters for long trips from Cape Town to other cities and towns, and for coastal humidity in places like Durban.

Team members who do well here are usually comfortable with a paced routine, clear handovers and a practical approach to problem solving. If a ceramic item needs a replacement check, or a gift note needs to be corrected before dispatch, the team has to handle it neatly and without fuss.

What the team works with

Our work touches many parts of the business, from maker relationships to final delivery. That means a new team member may see a wide range of tasks, not just one narrow job. It also means good communication is important, because the buying table, packing area and customer care side of the business need to stay aligned.

  • Handmade ceramics that need careful packing and care guidance
  • Textiles that may need folding, labelling and fibre care notes
  • Wood pieces that need checking for finish and handling marks
  • Decor items that require tidy presentation and secure wrapping

If you enjoy work that is practical, detail heavy and linked to South African making, you may suit LocalMaker well.
