Our history

Using her first sewing machine in Woodstock, the founder made a small range of handmade homeware and built LocalMaker around South African craft. Today, the business brings together practical gifting and pieces with character, care, and a proper story behind them.

A Woodstock beginning with a few honest pieces

LocalMaker’s early days were shaped by the kind of buying that happens face to face in Cape Town workshops and studios. The first range was modest: a mix of ceramic bowls, handwoven textiles and a few carved or turned wooden pieces that could stand up to daily use. What mattered most was workmanship, useful shapes and materials that felt good in the hand.

The business grew from those first selections because people wanted homeware that was not mass made and not all the same. Customers were drawn to the uneven glaze on a cup, the grain in a serving board, or the way a hand dyed cloth sits differently on a table. Those details still guide the curation today.

How the craft range grew

As LocalMaker developed, the collection widened to include more handmade ceramics, woven linens, cushions, table runners, trays, baskets and decor pieces suited to real homes. The focus stayed on South African makers, with each item chosen for its finish, materials and the care taken in production. Some pieces suit relaxed everyday use, while others are picked for gifting and special rooms.

There is a practical side to the curation too. Ceramic items need good forming and firing so they hold up in kitchens and dining rooms. Textiles need strong stitching, colour that can be maintained with sensible washing, and fabrics that feel comfortable in warm coastal homes as well as drier inland spaces. Wooden items need clean sanding, careful joining and finishes that suit handling over time.

  • Ceramics with steady weight, balanced shapes and a made-by-hand feel
  • Textiles that add texture to tables, beds and living rooms
  • Wooden homeware chosen for grain, finish and useful form
  • Decor pieces that work in small flats, family homes and guest spaces

Customers who use the pieces every day

LocalMaker serves people who buy for themselves, for gifts and for shared occasions. Some order a single mug or bowl to start a collection. Others choose housewarming sets, wedding gifting, corporate gifts or curated boxes for family and friends. The collection also suits interior stylists and retailers looking for distinctive local goods, though the heart of the business remains the everyday home.

Customers across Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Stellenbosch often want items that can move easily between formal and casual settings. A ceramic platter can work at a long lunch in the Southern Suburbs or on a coffee table in the Atlantic Seaboard. A woven throw may sit just as well in a city apartment as in a family home in Durban where humidity changes how fabrics are stored and cared for.

The team behind the selection and the delivery

Today LocalMaker is run by a small team with clear roles and close coordination. Thandeka Mkhize leads the business, while Jaco Mahlaba handles operations, Ayanda Matlala leads buying and curation, Leanne Daniels manages customer care, Sibusiso Liebenberg coordinates logistics, and Megan Mafokeng looks after content and community. That mix keeps the work practical. Decisions are made with the stock room, the packing table and the customer in mind.

Because the business works with handmade goods, care matters at every step. Items are checked for finish, packed to protect ceramic edges and surfaces, and grouped so delivery stays organised across South Africa. The team also helps with replacement support where needed and gives care advice for textiles, wood and ceramics so the pieces last longer in real homes.
